4-H Awards Recognition

We love to recognize our Wise County 4-H you by the dedication they put into the various projects they participate in as well as their contributions to the clubs they belong to. Each year we hold an Awards Banquet where the winners of the awards are recognized. Below are the links to the appropriate applications.

 

Important Dates

All applications are due to the County Extension Office or emailed to karly.west@ag.tamu.edu with kelly.huston@ag.tamu.edu CC’d by Monday, June 26, 2023 by 5:00 PM. Award interviews will be set after the awards application deadline.

County Awards

4-H Rookie Award

Available to any 4-H member, regardless of age, who is in their first year of membership.

4-H Honor Roll Award

  • Available to junior members.
  • May be received once by a junior member.
  • Once received, the member continues to be known as a 4-H Honor Roll member during their junior age.

  • Available to intermediate members.
  • May be received once by an intermediate member.
  • Once received, the member continues to be known as a 4-H All-Star member during their intermediate age.

Special County Awards

This award is made available on a county-wise basis to encourage excellence in 4-H projects. A 4-H member is eligible for any award if the project is included in their 4-H Record Book. A member may apply for all awards. Awards for Outstanding Achievement are awarded in the following project areas:

Requirements:

  • Must be in the 6th-12th grade as of the current 4-h year. See the important dates page.
  • Must have completed 2 years of 4-H membership.
  • Must be active in the special project during the current year and the previous year.
  • Must complete the appropriate award application and biography.
  • Some awards may not be given every year.
  • 4-H members may apply for more than one special award in the same year.
  • There will only be one award winner per special award category.

A member may submit as many project completion forms as projects they have completed in the ’22-’23 year.

Star Awards

Bronze Star Award

  • Criteria for selection:
    • The Bronze Star Award will be presented each year to up to two (2) outstanding 4-H Junior Members at the Wise County Awards Banquet. Age requirements are grades 3rd to 5th at the time of application.
    • Must have been in 4-H for at least one year.
    • The Bronze Star Award will be presented to the most deserving junior member without regard to race, gender, sexual identity, etc.
    • The 4-H member must submit a 4-H Record Book in the year they are to be considered for the Bronze Star Award.
    • The 4-H member must attend at least 50% of their club meetings.
    • The 4-H member must have completed two different project areas during their 4-H career.
    • Must have participated in various 4-H activities, community service, and leadership experiences.
    • A member may receive the Bronze Star Award only one time.

Silver Star Award

  • Criteria for selection:
    • The Silver Star Award will be presented each year to up to two (2) outstanding 4-H Intermediate Members at the Wise County Awards Banquet. Age requirements are grades 6th to 8th at the time of application.
    • Must have been in 4-H for at least two years.
    • The Silver Star Award will be presented to the most deserving intermediate member without regard to race, gender, sexual identity, etc.
    • The 4-H member must submit a 4-H Record Book in the year they are to be considered for the Silver Star Award.
    • The 4-H member must attend at least 50% of their club meetings.
    • The 4-H member must have completed three different project areas during their 4-H career.
    • Must have participated in various 4-H activities, community service, and leadership experiences.
    • A member may receive the Silver Star Award only one time.

Gold Star / The Danforth “I Dare You” Awards

Gold Star

  • Criteria for Selection:
    • The 4-H member must be at least 15 years of age at the time of application.
    • The 4-H member must have completed at least 3 years in 4-H, including the current year.
    • The member must attend at least 50% of their club meetings.
    • The 4-H member must submit a 4-H Record Book in the year they are to be considered for the Gold Star Award.
    • The Gold Star is presented to the most deserving senior member without regard to race, sex, religion, handicap, creed, or national origin.
    • A member may receive the Gold Star Award only one time.
    • Projects and Activities
      • During their years in 4-H, the 4-H member must have:
        • Completed projects in three different project areas including submission of a 4-H Record Book.
          • Participated in one or more activities in at least three of the following areas:
            • Method Demonstraion/4-H Presentation
            • Contests
            • Project Exhibits
            • Camps
            • Leadership Lab
            • Citizenship Activities
            • State and National Congress
            • Fund Raising
            • Ambassadorship/Mentorships

Danforth “I Dare You” Leadership Award

The I Dare You Leadership Award
The I Dare You Award was first offered in 1941 by businessman and philanthropist, William H. Danforth, who dared young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through lives of service. The founder of the Ralston Purina Company and a successful entrepreneur and civic leader, Mr. Danforth believed that a balanced four-fold life of mental, physical, social, and spiritual development sustained individuals for the demand of leadership.

Selection

The “I Dare You” Award is a National 4-H Award, two (2) are presented at the county level. The following criteria will be considered the minimum. Any 4-H member not meeting these criteria will not be considered for the award. The organization may choose not to award the “I Dare You” award if there are no 4-H members in the county who actually exceed the minimum criteria.

A. The 4-H member must be at least 15 years of age but not over 19 years of age as of August 31 of the current 4-H year and have completed at least three (3) years in 4-H including the current year.

B. The 4-H member must submit a record book for the county competition in the year the 4-Her is to be considered for the Danforth – “I Dare You” showing at least three (3) years of 4-H experience.

C. Project Activities during the 4-Hers’ years in 4-H, the member must have:
1. Completed projects in three (3) different project areas that are detailed in the Record Book.
2. Participated in and completed one or more activities in at least three (3) of the following areas in the current year.
a. Educational Presentation
b. Contests
c. Project Exhibits
d. Camps
e. Leadership Lab
f. Citizenship Activities
g. Public Relations-Examples: demonstrations, speeches, poster displays, club exhibits, project shows, radio, TV, newspapers, special projects
h. Other (may include fundraising, State and National Congress, etc.)
i. Project activities
D. Leadership – During the applicant’s years in 4-H, the 4-H member must have done the following:
1. Served as an officer or committee chairman at some level of the 4-H organization club, county, district, state, and/or
2. Served as a teen leader in an activity or project with, or under the supervision of an adult volunteer leader.

E. Community Service, Citizenship, Character – The 4-H member must have participated in one or more community service activities such as:
1. Working or counseling with 4-H members
2. Communities Service projects, either individual, group, or club-type projects, contributions to school, church, and community.
3. Must have motivated other 4-H members through participation in demonstrations, projects, and/or exhibits.
4. Character should include attitude and personal growth in accepting responsibilities and serving others.
